The Salesian facility in Jeongnim-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, is listed in the Catholic Directory of Korea as the “Daejeon Jeongnim-dong Community / Novitiate,” a community of a men’s religious institute. The Salesian Youth Education Pastoral Center is also registered at the same address, making this a Daejeon base where the common life and formation of religious members meet the Salesian apostolate of youth education. Its purpose and mode of operation are therefore distinct from a local pastoral space centered on a parish church.
Following St. John Bosco’s preventive system of education, the Salesians regard helping young people, especially those in greater need of care, to grow in faith and character as a central mission. At Jeongnim-dong, this youth apostolate is present alongside the congregation’s internal formation. The current official designations “Community / Novitiate” and “Youth Education Pastoral Center” themselves show how religious life, formation, and education are connected within a single Salesian spirit. The place can therefore be understood as a setting where Salesian educational spirituality is practiced for the growth of both religious members and young people.
History & origins
The Salesian presence in Jeongnim-dong is connected with the expansion of the congregation’s youth education apostolate in postwar Korea. After entering Korea in 1954, the Salesians began with schools and technical education and gradually broadened their work to include facilities for working youth, parish ministry, and other fields.
In 1979 the Salesians in Korea began retreat programs for youth character education. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that youth training facilities were subsequently established in locations including Singil-dong in Seoul, Taean in Chungcheongnam-do, Jeongnim-dong in Daejeon, and Sanong-dong in Chuncheon. Jeongnim-dong thus became one of the Daejeon-area bases for youth training and educational ministry.
The current Catholic Directory of Korea confirms that Salesian facilities continue to exist in Jeongnim-dong. Publicly available sources, however, do not provide a detailed chronology showing when and how the original youth training facility was reorganized into the present arrangement. The history that can be stated with confidence is therefore best limited to the sequence of the congregation’s postwar arrival in Korea, expansion of its youth training apostolate, and establishment of Jeongnim-dong as one of its regional bases.
