History & origins
The Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Service were founded in Wonju on September 11, 1983, by Sr. Heide G. Brauckmann, whose ministry had been rooted in health care and social service. Drawing on her experience caring for patients in Korea, she recognized that broader forms of care were needed not only for the sick but also for older persons, persons with disabilities, and children, and she began the religious community in response to a request from the Diocese of Wonju.
The early community gradually clarified its Franciscan and missionary-service identity. On September 11, 1988, it adopted its present name, Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Service, and in 1990 established its motherhouse in Dangye-dong, Wonju. In 1993 it gained a stronger institutional base for social-welfare work and expanded its ministries through medical and welfare facilities and parish apostolates.
In 1996 the congregation sent sisters to Zambia, marking a major expansion of its overseas mission, and it later extended missionary work to Brazil and elsewhere. As the congregation grew, a community was also established in the Diocese of Daejeon and continues there today. The available public directory and historical sources do not give the exact date when the Daejeon community was established, so no such date has been inferred here.
