About this place

Onyang Yonghwa-dong Catholic Church is the church of Onyang Yonghwa-dong Parish in the Asan District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. The Korean Catholic directory lists the parish patron as the Passion of St. John the Baptist; it also records the presence of the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters and one mission station under the parish. The church is the parish center where Catholics around Yonghwa-dong in Asan celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue faith formation and community life.

By taking the Passion of St. John the Baptist as its patronal mystery, the parish places fidelity to the Gospel and witness to the faith at the heart of its communal symbolism. The present name Onyang Yonghwa-dong clearly reflects the local identity, while the parish functions within the Asan District both as the center of liturgical life for local Catholics and as a pastoral unit connected with its mission-station community.

History & origins

Onyang Yonghwa-dong Parish was established in August 1985 when it was separated from Onyang Parish. The current Korean Catholic directory gives August 19 as the foundation date, while the Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism gives August 29. Although the sources differ on the exact day, both confirm that the parish became independent from Onyang in the same month. Its original name was “Yonghwa Parish.”

The parish name was adjusted twice as local administrative names and patterns of daily life changed. According to the Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism, it was renamed “Asan Yonghwa-dong” in 1994, and in December 2000 the older regional name Onyang was restored, producing the name “Onyang Yonghwa-dong.” The name in use today was established through this sequence.

These changes in name are best understood not as changes in the identity of the parish itself, but as efforts by the same Catholic community to express its local setting more clearly. Since becoming independent from Onyang Parish in the 1980s, the community has maintained its continuity through the growth of the Asan area and changes in administrative and everyday geography, eventually taking the present form of Onyang Yonghwa-dong Parish.
