About this place

Onyang Punggi-dong Catholic Church is the church of Onyang Punggi-dong Parish in the Asan District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. The Korean Catholic directory records St. Joseph the Worker as its patron and lists no mission station currently under the parish. It is an independent local parish where Catholics in Punggi-dong and the surrounding living area of Asan gather for Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, faith formation, and community activities.

Its patronage by St. Joseph the Worker connects the parish's symbolism with a faithful Christian life lived through ordinary work and family life. Although relatively recent, the parish became a center of local liturgy and pastoral care after securing a church of its own, and it now shares with other parishes in the Asan District the task of serving Catholic communities that have emerged with urban expansion.

History & origins

Onyang Punggi-dong Parish was established on January 12, 2011, and a record of the Daejeon Diocese Justice and Peace Commission explains that the community was separated from Onyang Yonghwa-dong Parish. Although the new parish had begun, it was difficult to find a suitable rental space within its territory, so in its early period the community celebrated Mass in the first-floor hall of its mother parish, Onyang Yonghwa-dong.

Construction of an independent church began in April 2012. According to the same source, an entrance Mass for the new church was celebrated on December 23 of that year, presided over by Bishop Lazarus You Heung-sik. After nearly two years of sharing space with the mother parish, the community finally obtained a liturgical home of its own.

The early history of Onyang Punggi-dong shows clearly that a new parish does not always begin at the same moment as its church building. The community was formed first, continued to celebrate Mass in borrowed space at the mother parish, and then established an independent pastoral base in the area through construction of its own church. The process offers a concrete example of how a new parish community took root amid the urban expansion of Asan.
