About this place
Onyang Mojong-dong Catholic Church is the church of Onyang Mojong-dong Parish in the Asan District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. The Korean Catholic directory records the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph as the parish patron and lists no mission station currently under its care. It is the parish center for Catholics around Mojong-dong and Gwongok-dong in Asan, where Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, faith formation, and community life are carried on.
Its dedication to the Holy Family links the parish's identity with faith lived first in the family and with a community that cares for one another. Although it is a relatively recent parish, it has become established as an independent pastoral community within the Asan District, serving the liturgical and spiritual life of local Catholics. Visitors can understand this church as a local parish that emerged alongside changes in Asan's urban living areas.
History & origins
Onyang Mojong-dong Parish began on January 12, 2011, when it was separated from Onyang Parish. A diocesan account states that the new community started with 578 Catholics. Once it became an independent parish, its most urgent task was to secure a church and pastoral space of its own.
In May of the same year, the parish acquired a site of about 500 pyeong, and construction of the church began in October. According to records of the Diocese of Daejeon, parishioners formed a building committee and took part in prayer, donations, and volunteer labor as they laid the foundations for the new community.
On February 12, 2012, the first Mass was celebrated in the new church. At the time, the complex stood on a site of about 1,692 square meters and included the church, a rectory, and a parish office. The parish thus obtained its own liturgical space only about one year and one month after its separation.
This concentrated early history shows how the need for a new parish arising from urban growth was followed quickly by the community's effort to secure land and build a church. The distinctive feature of Onyang Mojong-dong's beginnings lies not simply in its separation from the mother parish, but in the way the new community established its own spaces for liturgy and pastoral life.
