About this place

Okgye-dong Catholic Church is the church of Okgye-dong Parish in the Daejeon Central District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. The Korean Catholic directory lists it as an independent parish under the patronage of the 103 Korean Martyr Saints. It is the parish center where local Catholics in Jung-gu, Daejeon gather for Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, and various forms of communal faith life; the current directory lists no separate mission station under the parish.

Its patronage by the 103 Korean Martyr Saints directly connects the parish's identity with the Korean Church's tradition of witnessing to the faith under persecution. Okgye-dong Catholic Church is therefore best understood not simply as a local religious facility, but as a parish of the Diocese of Daejeon that gathers believers to remember the faith of the martyrs and carry that witness into everyday Christian life.

History & origins

Okgye-dong Parish was established on September 1, 1981, when it was separated from Munchang-dong Parish. The Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism records that Seokgyo-dong, Ho-dong, Okgye-dong, Gao-dong, and part of Sannae were transferred from Munchang-dong to the new parish. The new community began its life as an independent parish in southeastern Daejeon under the patronage of the 103 Korean Martyr Saints.

As the city grew and the distribution of Catholics changed, the parish boundaries were adjusted again. In 2011 Gao-dong Parish was separated from Okgye-dong. According to the Diocese of Daejeon, on November 20 of that year Okgye-dong celebrated its 30th anniversary Mass together with a farewell Mass for the Gao-dong community. Gao-dong then celebrated its first principal Sunday Mass on November 27 and began its life as a separate parish community.

This history shows a parish that first became independent from Munchang-dong in 1981, formed its own community, and later gave rise to another parish as the surrounding area developed. It also illustrates how the history of a local parish can be intertwined with the wider growth of the diocesan Church, which reorganizes pastoral territories and establishes new communities in response to changes in population and daily life.
