About this place
Nonsan Buchang-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Nonsan district of the Diocese of Daejeon, with Our Lady of Lourdes as its patron. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea records the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres as the religious congregation serving with the parish and lists two mission stations under it. As one of the long-established centers of Catholic community life in Nonsan, the parish is not only a place for Mass and the sacraments but also a pastoral hub connected with nearby mission communities.
The present church is known for its modern red-brick Catholic architecture and Marian stained glass on the front. Nonsan City materials introduce the building as a cultural heritage site that reflects the history of Catholicism in the area and present the traces of faith preserved in and around the church in relation to local history. The site therefore allows visitors to understand both the parish’s living community today and the historical memory of Catholic life in Nonsan.
History & origins
The history of Buchang-dong Parish grew out of the earlier Nolmoi mission station. The Digital Nonsan Cultural Encyclopedia records that Nolmoi mission station existed in what is now the Buchang-dong area from 1907 to 1921. Building on that Catholic community, the parish was established on June 1, 1921, a date also given as the official foundation date in the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea. An early church building was constructed in 1927, giving the growing Catholic community of Nonsan a more permanent center.
As the community expanded, plans for a larger church were pursued after the Korean War era. According to Nonsan City materials, preparations for a new church began in 1956, construction started in May 1958, and the church was dedicated on October 11, 1961. The design involved plans by the French architect Lucien Beun and participation by the Korean architect Lee Hee-tae. The stained glass on the facade, created by the French artist Antoine Bessac, depicts the apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes.
The church has remained not simply as an old religious building but as evidence of the development of Catholicism in Nonsan and its encounter with modern architecture. On June 27, 2022, Nonsan City designated the church as a local cultural heritage property, formally recognizing its historical and architectural value. Memories of the earlier church and memorials connected with missionaries around the site also recall the parish’s Catholic history extending beyond a century.
