About this place
Mosan Catholic Church is a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon in the Asan district, serving as a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life for Catholics in the Baebang and Tangjeong areas of Asan. Its patron is Saint Francis of Assisi. Because the parish grew out of a long mission-station tradition, its identity remains closely connected with smaller local communities of faith. Maegok Mission Station is currently linked to Mosan Parish.
Mosan is also a parish whose pastoral territory has changed as population and patterns of settlement in the Asan area have developed. Alongside its own liturgical and pastoral life, it has served as a point of connection between local mission stations and neighboring parishes that later emerged from the same growing Catholic population. To understand Mosan, it is therefore helpful to see not only the present church building but also the memory of Catholic villages and mission stations from which the community developed.
History & origins
The roots of the Mosan Catholic community reach well before the establishment of the parish itself. The history of Onyang Parish records that after the Korean War, the closed Gongsuri Mission Station was reopened as Mosan Mission Station. A new mission hall was built in 1970, and in 1977 Onyang Parish purchased 519 pyeong of land for Mosan, giving the community a more stable base. The Diocese of Daejeon also connects Mosan’s deeper roots with the Catholic community of Maritgol in Sucheol-ri, Gwangdeok.
As the Catholic population and pastoral needs of the area increased, Mosan Mission Station was raised to parish status in August 1985 and separated from Onyang Parish. Father Michael Lee Eun-jin was assigned as the first pastor, and the former mission-station community began to develop the structures of an independent parish. The faithful subsequently prepared a new church, which was dedicated on April 5, 1991.
Continued development in the Baebang area of Asan and growth in the Catholic population led another parish to emerge from Mosan. On January 23, 2008, Baebang Parish was separated from Mosan, showing how Mosan served as an intermediate pastoral center in the expansion of the Church in southeastern Asan.
At the parish’s twenty-fifth anniversary Mass in 2010, the community looked back on its movement from mission station to parish and marked the anniversary through activities including handwritten copies of Scripture and a walking pilgrimage. Mosan’s history is therefore best understood not as a single founding event, but as a regional story that links mountain Catholic villages, a mission station, elevation to parish status, and the later formation of neighboring parishes.
