About this place
Maegok Mission Station is a Catholic mission station in the Diocese of Daejeon and is currently under Mosan Parish in the Asan district. A mission station is a smaller liturgical community than a parish, providing a nearby place where local Catholics can pray together and maintain a community of faith. Maegok likewise connects Catholics in the Tangjeong area of Asan with the life of their parent parish.
The directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea clearly lists Maegok as a mission station under Mosan Parish. Its character is therefore best understood as a community and worship space linked to a parent parish rather than as an independent parish. The memory of the local Catholic community formed around its mission-station hall shows how a small community of faith has continued its relationship with the parish even as the surrounding Asan area has undergone major social and physical change.
History & origins
The exact year in which Maegok Mission Station was first established is not clear in the reliable sources currently available. The history of Onyang Parish, however, records that in May 1981 a new hall was built for Maegok Mission Station during the pastorate of Father Francis Yu In-seong. This shows that by that time a mission-station community was already organized in the Maegok area and had obtained a dedicated space for common liturgy and gatherings.
At the time, Maegok belonged within the pastoral network of Onyang Parish, which served several mission stations across the Asan area. In August 1985, Mosan Mission Station was raised to parish status and separated from Onyang. That change formed part of a broader process in which expanding Catholic communities and revised pastoral boundaries reshaped the relationship between local mission stations and their parent parishes.
The current directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea identifies Mosan Parish as the parent parish of Maegok Mission Station. The securely documented line of Maegok’s history therefore runs from the existence and renewal of its mission hall in 1981, through the 1985 reorganization created by the establishment of Mosan Parish, to its present continuity as a mission station under Mosan. The earlier formation of the Catholic community and the exact date of the mission station’s first establishment are not stated because reliable evidence for them has not been found.
