History & origins

The Consolata Missionaries were founded by Father Giuseppe Allamano in Turin, Italy, on January 29, 1901. The institute's name is connected with devotion to Our Lady Consolata, or Our Lady of Consolation, and from its beginnings it placed missionary service in places where the Gospel had not been sufficiently proclaimed at the heart of its vocation.

The institute entered Korea in 1988. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that four missionaries from Italy, Spain, Colombia, and Brazil came to Korea to begin the mission, while the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea directory gives January 20, 1988 as the date of entry. This established a foundation for the institute to continue its international missionary experience within the Catholic Church in Korea.

The community in Gap-dong, Daejeon became one concrete local base for that mission. According to the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea directory, the branch house was established with the approval of Bishop Lazarus You Heung-sik of Daejeon on March 6, 2012. Later that year, on October 29, the “Spring of Consolation” was blessed. The Diocese of Daejeon records that representatives of the Cheontae Buddhist Order and Won Buddhism attended and joined in planting a tree symbolizing harmony among religions.

This development shows how the Gap-dong community became more than a residence for missionaries, providing a setting in which the Consolata missionary tradition could take concrete form in Korean society through interreligious dialogue and encounter.
