About this place

Juk-dong Catholic Church serves a parish in the Daejeon Northern District of the Diocese of Daejeon and has the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as its patron. It is a relatively young parish, established as the Juk-dong area of Yuseong-gu developed into a new residential district and required a separate Catholic community. It remains registered today in the official Catholic directory as an independent parish.

The parish provides local Catholics with a nearby place to celebrate Mass and the sacraments and to sustain the faith life of families and different generations. Its patronage under the Holy Family naturally resonates with the parish's concern for faith within families and the wider community. Unlike a major historic shrine, the significance of Juk-dong Catholic Church lies in the way a Catholic community emerged in a newly developed urban area and gradually secured its own liturgical space and pastoral foundations.

History & origins

Juk-dong Parish was established on August 18, 2017, after being separated from Yuseong Parish. A report in the Catholic Times at the time records that the new parish, created to serve the Juk-dong area, began with 77 households and 214 Catholics. The establishment reflected the division of an existing pastoral territory in response to residential development and population movement in Yuseong-gu, creating a parish community closer to local Catholics.

After the parish was founded, securing a permanent church became the next major task. The Diocese of Daejeon held a site blessing and groundbreaking ceremony for the new church on April 21, 2018. With the beginning of construction, the newly organized parish moved from institutional establishment toward creating a physical base for liturgy and community life.

Public official records do not provide enough evidence to establish the exact later completion date and the full sequence of construction changes. The early history of Juk-dong Catholic Church can therefore be organized around two documented turning points: the establishment of the parish in 2017 and the start of construction on its church in 2018. The rapid succession of parish organization and church construction reflects the character of a Catholic community formed within a newly developing residential district.
