About this place
Jinsan Shrine Church is the historic church building preserved within Jinsan Shrine. Built in 1927, it served for many decades as the central place where local Catholics gathered for Mass and community life. While the shrine as a whole commemorates the Jinsan Incident of 1791 and Blesseds Paul Yun Ji-chung and James Kwon Sang-yeon, the church building is significant as a tangible trace of the Catholic community that re-formed in Jinsan after the persecutions and gathered here for the liturgy.
Recognized for its historical and architectural rarity, the building was designated Registered Cultural Heritage No. 682 on 29 May 2017. Geumsan County also notes that the church erected in 1927 continues to be used as a space for Mass. It is therefore not merely an old structure, but a living religious heritage site linking the memory of the Jinsan martyrs with the faith life of the local community in the twentieth century and beyond.
History & origins
After the Korea-France Treaty, Catholics in Jinsan were again able to gather more openly, and the Gasa-beol mission station took shape in Jibang-ri. At first, the community continued its faith life in private homes and other modest spaces, and mission buildings were established more than once as the community became settled. In 1927, lay leader Lee Ui-gyu of the Gasa-beol mission station donated land, the mission station moved to the present shrine site, and the church built at that time became today's Jinsan Shrine Church.
Although modest in size, the church preserved its timber structure and much of its original spatial character while continuing to serve as a place for Mass. Geumsan County evaluates both the religious history of the local Catholic community that developed after the Jinsan Incident and the architectural rarity of the 1927 building.
The 2014 beatification of Paul Yun Ji-chung and James Kwon Sang-yeon brought renewed attention to Jinsan's place in the history of Catholic martyrdom in Korea and to the value of preserving the church. On 29 May 2017, the building was designated Registered Cultural Heritage No. 682, allowing it to continue both as a liturgical space and as a preserved work of modern religious architecture.
