About this place
Jinjam Catholic Church is a parish of the Daejeon Southern District in the Diocese of Daejeon, serving Catholics in the Jinjam area of Yuseong-gu, Daejeon as a local community for the sacraments, liturgy, faith formation, and communal life. The Catholic Church Directory of Korea records the parish as established on February 8, 2001, and identifies its patron saints as St. Joseph Han Jae-gwon and St. Peter Jeong Won-ji.
As the parish community for the Jinjam area, it serves as a center for Mass, sacramental life, faith formation, and community activities. Its dedication to two Korean martyrs also gives the parish an identity rooted not only in ordinary pastoral life but in remembrance of the Korean Church’s tradition of martyrdom. Visitors should therefore understand Jinjam primarily not as a separate shrine, but as a parish of the Diocese of Daejeon entrusted with the continuing liturgical and faith life of local Catholics.
History & origins
Jinjam Parish was established as a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon on 8 February 2001. This date is supported both by the Catholic Church Directory in Korea and by the parish's official record of former pastors. The first pastor, Fr. Peter Jeong Pil-guk, served from February 2001 until January 2006 and helped lay the pastoral foundations of the new community.
The parish subsequently became established as an independent Catholic community serving the Jinjam area under a succession of pastors. The official sources currently available provide a fairly clear record of the pastors and parish organization, but they do not sufficiently document the detailed process of church construction or possible changes in parish naming. For that reason, this account limits itself to the securely verified foundation date and early pastoral structure.
The history that began in 2001 can be understood as part of the formation of a local parish community closer to Catholics living in the expanding southwestern part of Daejeon. Building on that early pastoral foundation, the parish continues its life while remembering the faith of the two Korean martyrs whom it honors as patron saints.
