About this place
Junmin-dong Catholic Church serves a parish in the Daejeon Northern District of the Diocese of Daejeon and has St. Thomas the Apostle as its patron. It is the parish community in which Catholics of the Junmin-dong area continue their life of faith centered on Mass and the sacraments, and the official Catholic directory confirms it as a parish of the Diocese of Daejeon. The parish is best understood not simply as a church building but as a local community of the Church in which the faithful share liturgy, catechesis, fellowship, and service.
Recent community activities reported by the diocese show Junmin-dong Parish bringing together the principal Sunday Mass, faith formation, and communal sharing, with different generations and groups participating together. With the faith of St. Thomas the Apostle as a spiritual signpost, the parish provides a place within northern Daejeon where the faithful form relationships around the liturgy and carry the teaching of the Church into daily life. Visitors can understand Junmin-dong Catholic Church as a relatively recent urban parish in which worship, formation, and community life are closely connected.
History & origins
Junmin-dong Parish was established as a parish of the Diocese of Daejeon on January 20, 1997. The official Catholic directory records this date of establishment together with St. Thomas the Apostle as its patron. After the institutional founding of the independent parish, securing a stable liturgical space in which the faithful could celebrate Mass and develop community life became an important task.
A visit report preserved on the Catholic GoodNews portal in September 2000 describes Junmin-dong as a newly established community separated from a neighboring parish and notes that a new church was then under construction. At that time Mass was still being celebrated in a basement space rather than in a completed church, while the community continued to pray and prepare for the building project. The record shows how, during the first years after establishment, parishioners used temporary worship space while building both an independent church and the practical foundations of parish life.
This early period illustrates that the founding of a parish was not merely an administrative separation; it was accompanied by the gradual creation of a liturgical home and of the community's own local foundations. Because reliable public sources do not establish the exact date on which the new church was completed, this history is limited to the stages that can be documented: the establishment of the parish and the early construction process.
