About this place
Jeongnim-dong Catholic Church serves a parish in the Daejeon Southern District of the Diocese of Daejeon and has the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patron. It is the parish church where Catholics of Jeongnim-dong and the surrounding area celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and community life. The official Catholic directory confirms that the community continues today as an independent parish of the Diocese of Daejeon.
The significance of the church lies in its formation as a parish that allowed Catholics in the expanding southwestern part of Daejeon to practice their faith closer to home. Under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the parish gathers the faithful around the liturgy and connects the faith life of families and local neighborhood groups. Visitors can understand Jeongnim-dong Catholic Church not primarily as a monumental historic site but as a parish closely tied to the everyday life of local residents, shaped by the growth of the Church in southern Daejeon and by its separation from a neighboring parish.
History & origins
The formation of Jeongnim-dong Parish is connected with the reorganization of parishes in southwestern Daejeon. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, Doma-dong Parish had itself been separated from Yucheon-dong Parish in 1980. As the Catholic community in and around Jeongnim-dong continued to grow, another parish became necessary.
Jeongnim-dong Parish was established as an independent parish on August 1, 1994, after being separated from Doma-dong Parish. The same date is recorded in the current official Catholic directory, so the key point of establishment is confirmed by both a contemporary directory and a church-historical source. With the establishment of the parish, local Catholics gained a stable framework within their own parish for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and organized community life.
Reliable public sources do not provide enough detail to reconstruct the later stages of construction, enlargement, or renovation of the church building. The history of Jeongnim-dong Catholic Church is therefore best anchored in the clearly documented turning point of the parish's separation and establishment in 1994. It is also an example of how the Diocese of Daejeon organized growing urban Catholic communities into more locally accessible parish units.
