About this place

자양동 성당 is a parish church in the Daejeon East District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving Catholics in and around Jayang-dong, Dong-gu, through liturgy, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea lists Jayang-dong as a current parish of the diocese and names the Holy Trinity as its patronal dedication.

The parish emerged as the city expanded and the pastoral territory of Daedong Parish was divided. The present church is not only a place where Mass is celebrated but also the center of a local community that passed through a mission-station period, parish elevation, and the construction of a permanent church. With the Holy Trinity as its patron, the parish also carries a spiritual image of distinct persons becoming one communion in faith.

History & origins

Preparations for a parish in Jayang-dong began in May 1977 when the Diocese of Daejeon purchased land in the area, then part of Daedong Parish. A church was not built immediately, but the purchase secured a future pastoral base in anticipation of growth in the local Catholic population. In 1985 a retaining wall and temporary building were completed, and after the temporary chapel was blessed that December, the Jayang-dong community formally began as a mission station of Daedong Parish.

A priest was assigned in October 1986 to prepare for the creation of a parish, and on 16 February 1987 the mission station was elevated to parish status. In June of that year, the Holy Trinity was chosen as the parish patron, giving the new community a clear spiritual identity.

Construction of a permanent church became the next major task. Ground was broken in April 1989 and construction began the following month. Landscaping and work on an education hall and parking area continued in subsequent years. After roughly five years, the new church—one basement level and three stories above ground—was completed and dedicated on 5 May 1994 in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Joseph Kyeong Gap-ryong.

The history of 자양동 성당 thus traces a gradual progression from land secured in advance, to a mission station, to an independent parish, and finally to a permanent church. It illustrates how the Diocese of Daejeon developed a pastoral center step by step in response to the growth of an urban district.
