About this place
장항 성당 is a parish church in the Boryeong District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving the Catholic community of Janghang-eup in Seocheon County. The current diocesan parish list of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea includes Janghang Parish, and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records the Immaculate Heart of Mary as its patronal dedication.
Within the Catholic history of the Seocheon area, Janghang is a community that grew from a mission station into a parish at a relatively early date. As the port town and its sphere of daily life developed, the Catholic community expanded and became an independent parish, influencing the pastoral organization of the surrounding region. Today 장항 성당 is both a parish church for Mass and the sacraments and a place that carries forward the church reorganization that took place in the Seocheon–Janghang area during the 1930s and 1940s.
History & origins
An identifiable Catholic community at Janghang took shape with the establishment of Janghang Mission Station in 1936. Father Kim Yeong-sik Peter, then pastor of Seocheon Parish, considered Janghang a more suitable center for the development of the local Church and worked to have the mission station raised to parish status. In 1941 he purchased a large tract of land in Yeongnakjeong, in the area now known as Seongju-dong, and built a small structure that became a base for the future parish.
After this preparation, Janghang Mission Station was elevated to a parish on 15 December 1943, with Father Park Seong-chun Leo as its first pastor. The creation of Janghang Parish brought a major reorganization of pastoral responsibility in the Seocheon area: the former Seocheon Parish was for a time reduced to a mission station under Janghang. The new parish was dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The work of establishing a stable parish base continued after liberation. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s entry on Father Im Jong-gu records that he built a new church at Janghang in 1947 during his term as pastor. This represents the community’s movement from the provisional circumstances of its early years toward a more permanent liturgical setting.
The early history of 장항 성당 therefore follows a clear sequence: mission-station foundation, acquisition of land, elevation to parish status, and construction of a church. As Janghang developed as a port town, the parish became a significant center in the reorganization of Catholic pastoral life across the Seocheon area.
