About this place
입장 성당 is a parish church in the Cheonan East District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving the Catholic community centered on Ipjang-myeon in Cheonan. The current diocesan parish list of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea includes Ipjang Parish, while the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records St. Francis Xavier as its patron.
The parish is distinctive because it did not simply appear as a new community within today’s administrative boundaries. It grew from Catholic mission-station life in the Ipjang area that reaches back to the first half of the twentieth century. The church is therefore both a place for Mass and the sacraments and the outcome of a local community that preserved its faith through several changes of parish jurisdiction before becoming an independent parish. Knowing this background helps visitors understand 입장 성당 as a place where local church history and present parish life meet.
History & origins
Catholic community life in the Ipjang area began to take shape as a mission station around 1930 through the missionary activity of Father Gombert. At first there was no separate chapel, so Catholics used homes in Dokjeong-ri and Yuri as meeting places. When Cheonan Parish was established in 1939, the mission station came under its jurisdiction, and after Seonghwan Parish was separated in 1960, Ipjang continued as a mission station of Seonghwan.
After many years without a permanent mission-station hall, the community obtained one in 1973 when Lee Gyu-hwan Francis donated land in Hajang-ri. As the community grew, it was separated from Seonghwan Parish and elevated to an independent parish on 17 August 1988, with parish records transferred from Seonghwan.
In the first years of the new parish, Mass still had to be celebrated in the former mission-station hall, making a new parish site a major priority. Land at the present location was purchased in 1990; a prefabricated church and education hall were built in 1991, followed by a presbytery and convent in 1992. In 1995 the parish also began a multi-year fundraising plan for a better church building.
This development traces a clear movement from a mission station meeting in Catholic homes, to a community with its own hall, and finally to an independent parish able to establish its own spaces for liturgy, formation, and community life.
