Hwamalu Mission Station

History & origins

Materials preserved by the Gongju Studies Archive state that the Hwamalu community was founded as a mission station in the autumn of 1942. This is an important public record for establishing the beginning of a small rural Catholic community for which detailed parish histories are scarce. The sources currently available, however, are not sufficient to identify with certainty the individuals who led its foundation or the detailed formation of any Catholic community that may have preceded the mission station.

Construction of the mission hall began in 1955 and was completed in 1957. The archival description of the building records a single-story structure with a bell tower on the roof. It subsequently served as the communal space where Catholics of Hwamalu could gather for prayer and continue a life of faith connected with their parish.

The public archive preserves records showing the exterior of the mission station and elements such as a statue of the Virgin Mary, confirming that Hwamalu was not merely a mission-station name on a list but an actual place with a building and a communal Catholic life. Because detailed documentation of successive pastoral activities is limited, unverified dates and names are not added here.

In 2008 Hwamalu Mission Station was chosen as the starting point of a walking pilgrimage marking the 60th anniversary of the Diocese of Daejeon. Pilgrims received an introduction to the mission station and prayed there before continuing through Gongju Jungdong Catholic Church to Hwangsaebawi Martyrs Shrine. The memory of the mission station’s foundation and hall thus became linked with its later role as a pilgrimage starting point, leaving Hwamalu as a place connecting the Catholic traces of a rural Gongju community with the region’s path of martyr remembrance.
