About this place

Hansan Catholic Church is a parish of the Boryeong District in the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. Centered on Hansan-myeon in Seocheon-gun, it also serves Catholic communities in Masan-myeon and Hwayang-myeon of Seocheon and Yanghwa-myeon of Buyeo. The Catholic Church directory in Korea confirms that the parish was separated from Seocheon Parish and currently has two mission stations. It serves as a pastoral center where Catholics scattered across a broad rural area can continue their life of Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community through the parish and its mission stations.

The territory assigned by the Diocese of Daejeon extends beyond Hansan-myeon to several rural districts in both Seocheon and Buyeo. Hansan Catholic Church is therefore best understood not merely as a church building but as a parish community linking the surrounding countryside and its mission stations. A visitor can see here how a local Catholic community that grew within Seocheon Parish became an independent parish and continues its faith close to the everyday lives of people in the region.

History & origins

The Diocese of Daejeon officially announced the establishment of Hansan Parish on January 12, 2016. The new parish was assigned all of Masan-myeon, Hansan-myeon, and Hwayang-myeon in Seocheon-gun and all of Yanghwa-myeon in Buyeo-gun. Seocheon Parish was identified as the mother parish and the new parish was placed in the Boryeong District. At the time of the announcement, the community was counted as 263 Catholics in 139 households.

This decision created a separate parish territory for the Hansan area out of the broad rural region that had previously been served by Seocheon Parish. The diocesan notice explicitly identifies Hansan as a newly established parish, and the Catholic Church directory in Korea likewise records January 12, 2016 as its date of establishment. Together, these sources show that independent parish administration began at that time.

The available official sources clearly document the establishment date and territorial arrangement, but they do not provide enough detail about any earlier mission-station community in Hansan or about the construction history of the present church building. This account therefore limits itself to the verified process of establishing and separating the parish and does not add unsupported dates for a predecessor mission station or for the building.
