About this place

Gyeryong Parish belongs to the Southern Daejeon District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon and serves as the center of Catholic life for the faithful in the Gyeryong area of Chungcheongnam-do, where the community gathers around Mass and the sacraments. The diocese's current parish directory lists its territory as all of Gyeryong City and part of Yeonsan-myeon in Nonsan, while the Catholic Church directory in Korea records the Sacred Heart of Jesus as the parish patron.

Because the parish covers a broad area spanning an entire city, the church is more than a building for Sunday and weekday liturgies. It is a local center where Catholics from different neighborhoods continue catechesis, devotional life, fellowship, and service together. The parish's dedication to the Sacred Heart of Jesus also expresses a spiritual orientation toward making Christ's love and mercy visible in the life of the community.

History & origins

Gyeryong Parish was established on January 26, 1999, when the Diocese of Daejeon created four new parishes. The Catholic Times reported at the time that Gyeryong Parish was separated from Gasuwon Parish and that the new pastoral territory was assigned Duma-myeon and Beolgok-myeon.

On the same day, Gongju Singwan-dong, Mokcheon, and Bongsan-dong parishes were also created through separation from existing parishes. Gyeryong's establishment can therefore be understood as one part of a diocesan reorganization in which several existing parish territories were divided to form independent pastoral districts at the same time. With the creation of the new parish, the Catholic community in Duma and Beolgok was organized as a parish distinct from Gasuwon.

The Catholic Church directory in Korea records the same date as the parish's foundation. Because official sources tracing the later construction or relocation of the church in a continuous chronology were not sufficiently identified in this research, the early history is limited to facts that can be cross-checked, particularly the separation, foundation, and original territory.
