History & origins

Gwanjeo-dong Parish was established on January 30, 2001. It began as an independent parish during a period of residential expansion in southwestern Daejeon, and as the Catholic community of the broader Gwanjeo area grew, neighboring pastoral territories were later divided further.

In 2011, Gwanjeo 1-dong Parish was separated from Gwanjeo-dong, while Gwanjeo 2-dong Parish was also newly established in the same period. Through these changes, the Gwanjeo area developed from a structure in which one parish served a broad territory into a system of several parishes sharing pastoral responsibility by neighborhood. Gwanjeo-dong Parish remained one of the established pillars of Catholic life in the area.

More recently, ecological conversion and energy transition have added a new chapter to the parish's history. In 2024, the Diocese of Daejeon awarded Gwanjeo-dong Parish its “LUNA” carbon-neutrality certification after judging that the parish had met the standard of supplying 100 percent of its electricity from renewable energy. This can be seen as an example of a community founded as a local parish in 2001 expanding its activity in response to new pastoral concerns of its time.
