About this place
Gwanjeo-dong Parish belongs to the Southern Daejeon District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon and serves part of Gwanjeo-dong in Seo-gu, Daejeon. The Catholic Church directory in Korea records the Holy Family as the parish patron. As one of several parishes serving the broader Gwanjeo area, it continues to provide Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life for local Catholics.
The parish's dedication to the Holy Family connects its identity with faith lived within family life and with care across generations. In addition to its basic pastoral role as a local parish, Gwanjeo-dong has also taken part in ecological initiatives, showing an effort to extend the life of faith beyond liturgy and formation into everyday practice and social responsibility.
History & origins
Gwanjeo-dong Parish was established on January 30, 2001. It began as an independent parish during a period of residential expansion in southwestern Daejeon, and as the Catholic community of the broader Gwanjeo area grew, neighboring pastoral territories were later divided further.
In 2011, Gwanjeo 1-dong Parish was separated from Gwanjeo-dong, while Gwanjeo 2-dong Parish was also newly established in the same period. Through these changes, the Gwanjeo area developed from a structure in which one parish served a broad territory into a system of several parishes sharing pastoral responsibility by neighborhood. Gwanjeo-dong Parish remained one of the established pillars of Catholic life in the area.
More recently, ecological conversion and energy transition have added a new chapter to the parish's history. In 2024, the Diocese of Daejeon awarded Gwanjeo-dong Parish its “LUNA” carbon-neutrality certification after judging that the parish had met the standard of supplying 100 percent of its electricity from renewable energy. This can be seen as an example of a community founded as a local parish in 2001 expanding its activity in response to new pastoral concerns of its time.
