History & origins

Gwanjeo 1-dong Parish was established on January 12, 2011. An official diocesan notice from 2012 records that the community had been separated from Gwanjeo-dong Parish in 2011 and, because it was difficult to secure a church immediately within its new territory, rented a commercial space as a temporary meeting and worship place. The independent parish therefore began in a modest provisional setting before it had a permanent church building.

In September of the same year, the parish obtained a 992-square-meter site designated for religious use and began preparing for a new church. Diocesan assistance and building contributions from parishioners were gathered toward the land cost, while the burden and limited size of the rented space made establishing a church on the new site an important task for the community.

These efforts led to the entrance Mass for the new church on September 2, 2012. According to the Diocese of Daejeon, Bishop Lazarus You Heung-sik presided at the Mass, and parishioners celebrated the completion of their new church together. The early history of Gwanjeo 1-dong Parish can thus be summarized as a progression from separation from its mother parish, through life in a temporary rented space, to the creation of an independent church and community base through parish contributions and diocesan support.
