About this place

Goejeong-dong Parish belongs to the Western Daejeon District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon and serves as the local center where Catholics in the Goejeong-dong area of Seo-gu, Daejeon, continue Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The Catholic Church directory in Korea records St. Peter as the parish patron.

Located in the western part of Daejeon, the parish carries out the fundamental pastoral role of allowing local Catholics to sustain regular liturgical and sacramental life close to home. Its dedication to St. Peter is a spiritual sign recalling apostolic faith and the unity of the Church community, and the parish has continued for many years as part of Catholic life in western Daejeon.

History & origins

Goejeong-dong Parish was established on February 7, 1977. The entry for Mokdong Parish in the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia explains that, as the Catholic population of Daejeon expanded, Goejeong-dong was separated from the broad territory of Mokdong Parish. The Catholic Church directory in Korea records the same date of establishment.

The creation of Goejeong-dong Parish was part of a wider pattern in which the growth of the Catholic community in Daejeon led broad parish territories to be divided into more local units. With the establishment of an independent parish, Catholics in Goejeong-dong and nearby areas were able to continue liturgical and sacramental life within their own parish organization.

The detailed chronology of later church construction cannot be reconstructed with confidence from the official and Catholic sources currently available. What is clear is that the parish has continued since its establishment as a parish of the Western Daejeon District, and the separation of 1977 remains the firm historical starting point of the present Goejeong-dong Catholic community.
