History & origins

Gayang-dong Parish was established in August 1989 when it was separated from Seongnam-dong Parish. A diocesan history prepared for the fiftieth anniversary of Seongnam-dong Parish likewise records that Seongnam-dong separated Gayang-dong Parish in August 1989. The new parish emerged as Catholic life expanded in the growing residential areas around Gayang-dong and Birae-dong.

The new community then began preparing a church of its own, and construction of the new church started in June 1991. Work continued for several years. The completed reinforced-concrete complex had three stories above ground and a basement and included the church, a convent, parking, and other supporting spaces intended to sustain the liturgical and educational life of the newly formed parish.

On 6 June 1995, the new church was dedicated in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Joseph Kyeong Kap-ryong, bringing the parish’s initial church-building project to completion. The movement from separation from Seongnam-dong to the creation of an independent liturgical home is the central story of Gayang-dong Parish’s formative years.
