About this place
Gasuwon Catholic Church is the parish church of Gasuwon Parish in the Southern Daejeon District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. Its pastoral territory extends from Gasuwon-dong across several southwestern neighborhoods of Seo-gu, Daejeon, and as far as Beolgok-myeon in Nonsan. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists Our Lady of Lourdes as the parish patron. The parish community and church building serve as a center where Catholics from this broad area gather for Mass and the sacraments and continue their catechetical and communal life.
The fact that the parish territory stretches from Daejeon’s urban living area to its outskirts and into neighboring Nonsan helps explain the local character of Gasuwon Parish. For a visitor, the site is best understood not merely as a church building but as a pastoral center of the Diocese of Daejeon that links Catholics living across several different local communities into one parish.
History & origins
The origins of Gasuwon Parish go back to September 1979. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that a new parish was separated from Yucheon-dong Parish and established in Gyochon-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, under the name “Jinjam Parish.” The current directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea and the encyclopedia differ by one day in the recorded date of establishment, so this account uses only the point on which both sources agree: September 1979.
For roughly ten years, Jinjam Parish served Catholics around Gyochon-dong. As Daejeon developed and local patterns of settlement changed, the center of the parish was moved. In December 1989 the church was relocated to the present Gasuwon area, and at the same time the parish name was changed to “Gasuwon Parish.”
The present Gasuwon Catholic Church therefore did not arise as an entirely separate community. It is the continuation of the parish that began in the Jinjam area and subsequently moved and changed its name in response to the city’s expansion and the changing living patterns of parishioners. That continuity is the central thread of its history.
