About this place
Gao-dong Catholic Church is the church of Gao-dong Parish in the Eastern Daejeon District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. Its pastoral territory covers Gao-dong and part of Daeseong-dong. It is the local parish center for Catholics in southeastern Daejeon, where they gather for Mass and the sacraments and continue catechetical, communal, and parish life.
Because the parish is comparatively young, its church and supporting facilities have continued to develop in response to the needs of the community. Visitors can therefore understand Gao-dong Catholic Church not as a single finished building alone, but as the center of a living parish that has gradually expanded its spaces for liturgy, education, and pastoral life as the community has grown.
History & origins
Gao-dong Parish began in 2011 when it was separated from Okgye-dong Parish. According to diocesan records, about 720 Catholics formed the new parish community at the time, and Mass was celebrated in a small meeting house prepared on land that the diocese had already secured. The parish celebrated its first principal Sunday Mass on 27 November of that year.
At first, the community lacked sufficient space for worship, education, and fellowship, so facilities were added gradually. In 2013 an annex containing a dining area, kitchen, and restrooms was blessed, while the courtyard and devotional objects around it were also improved. This marked an early stage in the parish’s effort to build a fuller base for communal life beyond the minimum space needed for Mass.
The process of expansion continued. In 2026 reconstruction of the Seonggajeong Hall began in order to enlarge educational and pastoral spaces and bring the rectory onto the parish grounds. The gradual development from a small meeting house to a parish complex adapted to changing needs is a defining feature of Gao-dong Parish’s history.
