About this place
Gangyeong Catholic Church is the parish church of Gangyeong Parish in the Nonsan District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, with Gangyeong-eup as its present pastoral territory. The diocese also presents the site as the “Gangyeong Shrine and Church,” linking it to the memory of St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon’s return to Korea after his priestly ordination, his landing near Gangyeong, and his first priestly ministry in his homeland. The church therefore has a dual character: it is an active local parish and also a place of pilgrimage connected with an important episode in the history of the first Korean Catholic priest.
The present church building is itself a significant cultural heritage site. Korea’s national heritage authority lists the 1961 Gangyeong Catholic Church as National Registered Cultural Heritage and evaluates it as a notable example of modern Catholic architecture, particularly for its pointed-arch structural system and modern spatial treatment. It is thus both a functioning parish church and a place where modern Catholic architecture and the history of the local Church can be encountered together.
