은진 공소 is a mission station belonging to Yeonmu Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving as a local community that sustains Catholic life in Eunjin-myeon, Nonsan. A diocesan bulletin introduces it as “Yeonmu Parish Eunjin Mission Station,” showing the continuity between the Catholic tradition that has existed in the Eunjin area since the nineteenth century and the present mission-station community. It is a place where Catholics living away from the parish church gather for prayer and prepare for the sacraments.
Another distinctive feature of 은진 공소 is its old Korean-style timber chapel. According to diocesan records, the building is two bays wide and four and a half bays deep, with its timber framework visible inside. Rather than relying on elaborate decoration, it preserves the memory of the faith community in a simple traditional structure. Understanding 은진 공소 therefore means seeing both its continuing role as a mission station and the architectural and church-historical traces embodied in the building.
History & origins
Diocesan records show that a mission-station community was already present in the Eunjin area in 1885 under the name “Banggogae (Eunjin).” The area was then under the care of Father Doucet, and the local Catholic community continued despite later changes in parish jurisdiction. The same record notes that Jang Myeong-seon Paul served as the first lay leader around 1912.
Jurisdiction passed successively to Nabawi Parish in 1897 and Nonsan Parish in 1921. After Yeonmu Parish was established in 1958, 은진 공소 came under its care. This sequence shows how the community endured for many decades not as an independent parish but as a local center of Catholic life within the pastoral structure of neighboring parishes.
The mission-station building that remains today was topped out around Christmas 1949, but construction was halted by the Korean War. Work resumed after the upheaval of the war and the building was completed in 1954. Its simple Korean timber construction provides a visible reminder of how the community preserved a place of faith through a difficult period of modern Korean history.
