History & origins

Dunsan-dong Parish was established in 1998 as the new urban district of Dunsan developed. Because it was difficult to obtain an independent church site, the community began parish life using an underground space in an apartment commercial complex as its church. Although this differed from a conventional church building, Mass, catechesis, and parish gatherings continued there and formed the foundation of the urban parish.

Despite the limitations of the space, the community broadened its relationship with the surrounding neighborhood. In 2009 it carried out a life-sharing campaign centered on blood donation and organ-donor registration, attracting participation not only from parishioners but also from local residents. This became an example of how a parish that began in a small underground liturgical space expanded its pastoral relationship with the surrounding urban community.

After years of searching for a separate church site without success, the pastoral council decided in 2014 to remain in the existing location and rebuild the space. Construction was completed in November 2015, and the renewed church was dedicated on May 7, 2016, in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Lazarus You Heung-sik. The history of Dunsan-dong thus illustrates an urban pastoral approach in which a parish sustained itself by remaking its existing space within an established neighborhood rather than relocating to a conventional new site.
