History & origins

As the Daedeok Research Complex developed and research institutes and residential areas expanded rapidly, the Diocese of Daejeon began preparing a separate parish for the district. In 1985 it secured land within the research complex for a church and kindergarten, and the following year portions of Yuseong Parish were set aside as the nucleus of the new community. Doryong-dong Parish was established in August 1986 after being separated from Yuseong Parish.

The early community continued its liturgical life in temporary facilities while church construction proceeded in stages. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated near the end of 1991, and further work in 1992 provided church and educational spaces. As the Catholic population grew, Gung-dong Parish was separated in 1994, while the rectory and other supporting facilities were also completed in stages around the same period.

The building process reached a major milestone on October 3, 1996, when Bishop Joseph Kyeong Gap-ryong dedicated the new church. In addition to the main liturgical space, the complex included facilities such as a hall that also served catechetical purposes, allowing the growing parish to accommodate both education and community gatherings. The development of Doryong-dong illustrates how the diocesan pastoral structure grew in response to the expansion of the Daedeok research city.
