About this place

Doma-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving Catholics in the Doma-dong area of Seo-gu through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The Catholic Church directory in Korea lists the Holy Family as the parish patron, and sisters of the Congregatio Jesu participate in its pastoral ministry.

Located within a densely residential district, Doma-dong functions as a local parish where faith is lived through families and across generations. Its dedication to the Holy Family naturally connects faith within the home with fellowship in the parish community. For visitors, it is best understood not as a major pilgrimage or tourist destination but as a living neighborhood parish of the Diocese of Daejeon where ordinary liturgical and communal life continues steadily.

History & origins

Doma-dong Parish was established in 1980 after being separated from Yucheon-dong Parish. The growth of the Catholic population in the Doma-dong area created the need for an independent pastoral community. The current Catholic Church directory and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia give different exact dates for the establishment, but they agree on the broader fact that the parish was separated and founded in 1980.

Soon after its establishment, the community concentrated its efforts on building a church. Construction began on July 5, 1981, and the building was completed on December 25 of the same year as a structure with one basement level and one floor above ground. Financial difficulties, however, prevented an immediate dedication, and the community needed additional time after completion to address the cost of construction.

The church was formally dedicated on November 20, 1983, in a Mass presided over by Bishop Peter Hwang Min-seong. The roughly two-year interval between completion and dedication illustrates how the newly established parish gradually secured and stabilized its own liturgical space through the efforts of its community. Doma-dong has continued its pastoral life on that foundation as a parish under the patronage of the Holy Family.
