About this place

Dogo Catholic Church is a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon and serves as a center of faith where Catholics in the Dogo area of Asan gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Diocesan sources have described it as a typical rural parish, reflecting a community that has maintained close ties with local residents over many years.

In recent years, Dogo Catholic Church has also opened itself beyond its own parishioners by offering the “Sunset Retreat,” which makes use of the surrounding fields and evening landscape for prayer, reflection, and fellowship. Because the retreat is open to participants from outside the parish, the church functions not only as a local place of liturgy but also as a welcoming place of prayer for those seeking time away from daily life to renew their faith.

History & origins

Dogo Parish has continued its pastoral life as an independent parish community since 1974. Diocesan personnel records from the end of that year already identify a pastor assigned to Dogo, and in 2024 the parish officially commemorated half a century of history with a Mass of thanksgiving for its 50th jubilee, presided over by Bishop Augustine Kim Jong-su.

After decades of use, the church and its auxiliary facilities had become seriously aged. In 2016 the Diocese of Daejeon described Dogo as a rural parish with limited financial resources and organized a second collection to assist it. That same year, the parish community rebuilt the church, education hall, and rectory and renewed the surrounding facilities, providing a new foundation for its pastoral life.

During the 50th jubilee in 2024, former pastors were invited back so that the community could revisit its shared memories, and parishioners also worked to collect and record faith experiences from the previous five decades. The anniversary therefore became more than a celebration of buildings; it was an effort to hand on the lived faith of successive generations. The history of Dogo Catholic Church can thus be read as that of a small rural parish sustaining its liturgical life and communal memory through changing circumstances.
