About this place

Dangjin Sucheong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Daejeon in the Dangjin area, a Catholic community formed in the course of the city’s growth. The present church is a three-story building with one basement level. Its octagonal plan was designed to symbolize the Eight Beatitudes. The stained glass depicts scenes from the Old and New Testaments as well as saints and martyrs of the Korean Catholic Church, allowing architecture and sacred art to communicate the content of the faith together.

The parish patron is the Queen of Apostles. The church is also significant as the permanent home eventually established by a community that had worshiped in a series of temporary spaces. Today it is the parish center where Catholics in the area continue community life around Mass and the sacraments. Visitors can read the building’s form and stained glass as an expression of how this community has incorporated Scripture and the witness of the Korean Church into its sacred space.

History & origins

The beginnings of Dangjin Sucheong Parish lay in the need to form a new pastoral community as the Dangjin area grew and the territory of the existing Dangjin Parish became more extensive. Regional cultural records state that the process became concrete in August 2010 with the formation of a parish-separation preparatory committee. In January 2011, a diocesan decision formally separated the new community from Dangjin Parish and established it as a parish.

The new parish did not initially have a permanent church building. According to the Diocese of Daejeon’s record of the later dedication, the community celebrated Mass while moving among three temporary locations: the education hall of Dangjin Catholic Church, the Twin Building in central Dangjin, and even a vinyl greenhouse. After this period, the parish purchased a site for a new church in 2013 and began construction in May 2014.

The community completed the new church in August 2015 and celebrated an entrance Mass. It then prepared for the formal dedication through practices including Bible reading, transcription, and prayer. On May 19, 2018, the church was solemnly dedicated in a liturgy presided over by the diocesan bishop. The dedication was more than the completion of a building; it marked the culmination of the parish’s movement through temporary worship spaces toward a stable sacred space and communal center.

This sequence shows a parish that first came into being as a community and then gradually secured the space it needed. The progression from parish establishment to temporary worship, land purchase, construction, and dedication makes visible the relationship between the growth of Dangjin and the formation of a new Catholic community.
