About this place

Daesadong Catholic Church is a parish of the Daejeon Central District in the Diocese of Daejeon, serving an established urban area of Jung-gu through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The Korean Catholic Directory records Our Lady of Lourdes as the parish patron and also notes the pastoral presence of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres.

The dedication to Our Lady of Lourdes offers an important key to the parish's spiritual character. Marian devotion in Catholic life is not limited to private prayer but is traditionally connected with care for the sick, remembrance of those in difficulty, and mutual support within the community. In this older part of central Daejeon, Daesadong Parish continues to provide a local setting for liturgy, formation, and fellowship among the faithful.

History & origins

Daesadong Parish was established on 27 August 1980, during a period when Catholic communities in central Daejeon were expanding and the territories of existing parishes were being reorganized. As the city's population and Catholic presence grew, several new parishes were created, and the establishment of Daesadong Parish formed part of this broader pastoral restructuring. The Korean Catholic Directory records this date as the official foundation of the parish.

After its establishment, the community continued parish ministry within the urban neighborhoods of Jung-gu. Generations and local conditions changed, but the parish remained centered on the basic Catholic life of Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and devotional and communal activities. Because a continuous official chronology of every intermediate development is not readily available, uncertain dates for buildings or territorial changes are not asserted here.

In 2020, the parish marked the fortieth anniversary of its foundation with a Mass of thanksgiving. According to the Diocese of Daejeon, the community prepared for the anniversary through practices including the transcription of Scripture and the praying of the Rosary, and looked back on its history at a Mass presided over by the diocesan bishop. The anniversary provides an official milestone confirming the continuity of the parish community since its establishment in 1980.
