About this place

Daehwadong Catholic Church is a parish of the Daejeon Eastern District in the Diocese of Daejeon, serving Catholics in Daehwa-dong and nearby neighborhoods through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The Korean Catholic Directory lists St. Joseph the Worker as its patron and records the pastoral collaboration of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary of Mirinae.

The patronage of St. Joseph the Worker resonates naturally with the history of Daehwa-dong, where industrial and residential areas developed side by side. The parish grew as a local community in which people living their faith in the ordinary worlds of work and family could worship together and care for one another. More recently, charitable initiatives for neighbors have also been carried out through the parish, showing a role that extends from liturgy and catechesis to relationships with the surrounding community.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Daehwa-dong grew during a period of population increase associated with the development of Daejeon's Second Industrial Complex. To care for Catholics in the newly developing area, Samsungdong Parish established Daehwa-dong Mission Station in July 1985, and preparations for an independent parish developed around that community. About seven months later, Daehwa-dong Parish was formally established on 24 February 1986.

After the parish was established, securing a permanent church became a major task. The parish purchased a church site in 1987 and prepared for construction, and after a number of years the new church was dedicated on 28 October 1995. The progression from mission station to parish and then to a community with its own church reflects the pastoral response of the Diocese of Daejeon to the expansion of an industrial urban area and the growth of its Catholic population.

In 2026, the parish marked the fortieth anniversary of its foundation. Along with the anniversary Mass, it blessed a charitable sharing space known as the “Caritas Storehouse,” expressing a desire to extend the faith built by the early industrial-area community into service for its neighbors. The history of Daehwa-dong Parish thus continues from its origins in the urban expansion of the 1980s through the building of its church and into a wider ministry of care and sharing within the local community.
