History & origins

Daedong Parish was established on September 22, 1966. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea records this as its official foundation date, after which the community took its place as an independent parish in eastern Daejeon. The accessible official online sources do not provide enough detail to reconstruct the earliest separation process or the exact construction history of the first church building, so those matters are not supplemented by inference here.

In 2016, the parish marked its fiftieth anniversary with a series of events reflecting on half a century of parish life. According to a parish report posted by the Diocese of Daejeon, the year included a Mass and lecture by Bishop Lazarus You Heung-sik, a pilgrimage for parishioners, invited lectures, and a retreat in June, followed by an outdoor Mass and a community fellowship event in October. These were prepared not simply as commemorations but as occasions to review the parish’s past and renew the faith of the community.

The fact that the official Catholic directory continues to list Daedong as a distinct parish shows the continuity of the community that began in 1966. The reliably documented historical anchors are the parish’s foundation and its fiftieth-anniversary remembrance; unsupported dates for church construction or later expansions have therefore been left out.
