About this place
Daecheon Beach Catholic Church is a parish in the Boryeong District of the Diocese of Daejeon. Alongside ordinary parish life for local Catholics, it has long regarded pastoral care for Catholic visitors to Daecheon Beach as an important mission. Its patron is St. Jonah, and the church operates together with the Jonah facilities for education and lodging, allowing visitors to connect Mass and prayer with retreat and rest.
The parish is distinctive because it helps Catholics maintain their faith while traveling in the heart of a major tourist area. The architecture and imagery associated with Jonah and the great fish also evoke the biblical themes of repentance and a new beginning. Daecheon Beach Parish is therefore best understood not simply as a convenience for tourists, but as a parish devoted to tourism ministry, where local Catholics and travelers can share in the liturgy and find a place of spiritual rest.
History & origins
Before the parish was established, Mass was already being provided in the Daecheon Beach area for Catholic tourists during the summer season. Priests from Daecheon Parish came to the beach to celebrate Sunday Mass during vacation periods, but growing numbers of visitors made it increasingly clear that a seasonal response alone was insufficient. The Diocese of Daejeon therefore secured a site and moved to establish a permanent pastoral base in the tourist area.
A priest was assigned to the area in August 1999, and Daecheon Beach Parish was formally established on 8 September of that year. Rather than constructing every facility from the beginning, the parish adapted an existing educational training building for use as a church and pastoral center, and St. Jonah was chosen as patron. The Catholic Times later described the parish as a pioneering Korean example of a parish that made tourism ministry an explicit pastoral mission.
From 2000, tourism ministry developed in a more systematic way. The parish grew beyond providing summer Masses to support retreat, lodging, education, and rest. The use of Jonah and the great fish in the church and related facilities combined the character of the seaside destination with a biblical symbol, while providing a shared base for the ordinary life of local parishioners and the faith life of Catholic travelers.
This history shows that Daecheon Beach Parish was not simply a church built near a tourist attraction. It became a place where the local Church experimented with and established a pastoral response to social changes in which travel and leisure were becoming an increasingly significant part of life.
