About this place

Daecheon Catholic Church is a parish of the Boryeong District in the Diocese of Daejeon and one of the principal Catholic communities serving central Boryeong. The Korean Catholic Directory lists Our Lady of Fatima as its patroness and records the pastoral presence of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres. The parish also has a mission station, giving it a pastoral structure that reaches beyond the immediate urban center.

Daecheon Parish has long formed part of the Catholic foundation of the Boryeong area as the city and its tourism industry developed. Today the church is a place for Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis, as well as the center of a community in which several generations have practiced their faith. The strong emphasis on prayer and common participation during the building of the present church also reflects a parish identity centered not simply on a structure but on the faithful who sustain it.

History & origins

Catholics in the Boryeong area lived under the pastoral care of several parishes during the first half of the twentieth century, and a distinct local community emerged around Daecheon Mission Station near the time of Korea's liberation. As tourism developed around Daecheon Beach and the local population and Catholic community grew, the mission station was raised to parish status from Janghang Parish on 17 October 1962.

The new parish first used a temporary church, then secured a new site in 1966. Construction of a permanent church began in August 1969, and the church and rectory were completed at the end of that year. During the 1970s, the parish expanded its activities through a kindergarten using the former church building, a credit union, and a local community of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres. These developments show that the parish's role extended beyond liturgy into education and local community life.

As the older church aged, the fiftieth anniversary of the parish in 2012 became a point of departure for planning a new church. Construction began in March 2015, and the new church and an auxiliary building were completed in August 2016. Parishioners participated through the Rosary, the transcription of Scripture, and other forms of prayer and offering. The formal dedication was delayed, and the new church was finally dedicated by the diocesan bishop on 8 October 2022.

The history of Daecheon Parish can thus be understood as the growth of a local mission community into a parish that responded to the development of the city and tourism, repeatedly renewing its church and pastoral foundations as circumstances changed.
