About this place
Cheonan Yonggok-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Cheonan Western District in the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving Catholics in Yonggok-dong and the surrounding apartment communities. The official Catholic directory lists the Holy Family as its patron and identifies Cheonan Shinbang-dong Parish as its mother parish. Its present character is closely connected with the fact that Catholics in a densely residential area can celebrate Mass and the sacraments and receive catechesis and faith formation close to their everyday lives.
With the Holy Family as its patron, the relationship between ordinary family life and parish faith provides one way of understanding the identity of the community. The parish functions as a local pastoral center where nearby residents can participate in the liturgy, learn the faith, and form a Catholic community without having to travel far outside their own living area.
History & origins
Cheonan Yonggok-dong Parish was announced as a new parish on August 19, 2015, together with the Diocese of Daejeon's second-half clergy appointments. The official Catholic directory records the same date as the parish's establishment. It began as a new parish in the Cheonan Western District, separated from its mother parish, Cheonan Shinbang-dong.
The diocesan announcement defined the new parish territory as part of Yonggok-dong together with several apartment complexes, including the Dongil Highvill complexes and I-Park, Woorim Feel-U, Halla Vivaldi, Samsung Sherville, and Donghoon The Shill. At the time of establishment, the parish was reported to include 236 households and 707 Catholics. These details show that the creation of the parish was not merely a change of name but a pastoral reorganization responding to the expansion of residential areas and the changing distribution of parishioners.
Yonggok-dong therefore began as a relatively recent urban parish. Unlike communities that developed over decades from an old mission station, it was created by establishing an independent parish around an already formed residential population, allowing local Catholics to continue their faith life closer to where they lived.
