About this place
Cheonan Wollang Catholic Church bears “Cheonan” in its name, but it is administratively located in Eumbong-myeon, Asan City, and belongs to the Cheonan Western District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. The official Catholic directory lists the Holy Family as its patron. Its most important present identity is that of a local pastoral center where Catholics in the Cheonan-Asan border living area, including communities of Eumbong and Tangjeong, gather for Mass and the sacraments, faith formation, and community life.
Although the church is in Asan by civil administration, the diocesan district structure and official parish name use “Cheonan Wollang.” Understanding this difference helps visitors locate the church and recognize its place within the diocese. With the Holy Family as patron, Catholics from nearby residential areas and villages continue their faith life together within one parish community.
History & origins
Cheonan Wollang Parish was established on January 9, 2015, in a diocesan announcement creating several new parishes. The Diocese of Daejeon defined its initial territory as parts of Deokji-ri, Sandong-ri, Wollang-ri, and other areas of Eumbong-myeon in Asan, together with Dongsan-ri, Myeongam-ri, and parts of Tangjeong-myeon. Its mother parish was Cheonan Seongjeong-dong, and at the time of establishment the new community was reported to include 185 households and 457 Catholics.
The creation of the parish provided a distinct pastoral center in an area that is administratively part of Asan but closely linked to the western Cheonan living zone. A new community was organized so that local Catholics could practice their faith nearer to where they lived as residential patterns changed, and Wollang subsequently became established as a parish of the Cheonan Western District.
Seven years later, in 2022, an ecological initiative became another notable point in the parish's development. A 131-kilowatt Bulhwi Sunshine No. 7 solar facility began operating at the church on July 7, and it was blessed on August 7. The diocesan ecology commission presented the project as part of the parish's concrete commitment to social evangelization. The parish's history thus extends from pastoral reorganization for a developing residential area to a community effort to make care for creation part of its common life.
