About this place
Cheonan Ssangyong-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Cheonan Western District in the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon and serves the Catholic community in the northwestern part of Cheonan. The official Catholic directory lists St. Andrew Kim Taegon as its patron saint and the Sisters of Notre Dame as the religious community participating in the parish apostolate. It has the character of a local parish in which Mass and the sacraments, faith formation, and community activities are centered in one place.
Its dedication to St. Andrew Kim Taegon gives the parish a distinct spiritual identity. Devotion to Korea's first Catholic priest and a martyr saint provides a way for local Catholics to remember the heritage of the Korean Church in ordinary parish life. The participation of the Sisters of Notre Dame also reflects a parish community in which priests, religious, and lay faithful cooperate in pastoral life.
History & origins
Cheonan Ssangyong-dong Parish was established on February 6, 1995. The historical record of Buldang-dong Parish explains that this community was separated from Bongmyeong-dong Parish, which itself had been separated from Oryong-dong Parish in 1985. The new parish thus emerged within the broader expansion of pastoral structures in western Cheonan as the city grew and the Catholic population increased.
In January 2004, another community was separated from Ssangyong-dong Parish. The historical record traces that community to today's Ssangyong 3-dong Parish and describes a continuing sequence of parish formation that included Buldang-dong Parish in 2005 and the present Ssangyong 2-dong Parish in 2006. The rapid creation of several parishes in a short period was linked to diocesan efforts to respond to new-town development and population change by testing smaller parish communities and forms of cooperative pastoral ministry.
The parish's spiritual identity later took on a diocesan dimension as well. During the bicentennial jubilee of the birth of St. Andrew Kim Taegon, observed by the Diocese of Daejeon from the First Sunday of Advent in 2020 until the eve of the First Sunday of Advent in 2021, Ssangyong-dong Church was designated as one of the churches at which the jubilee indulgence could be obtained. Its history thus brings together the subdivision of pastoral territories caused by urban growth and the continuing inheritance of Korean Catholic sanctity.
