Cheonan Ssangyong 2-dong Parish is a parish of the Cheonan Western District in the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving Catholics in the Ssangyong-dong area through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and parish community life. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment on 10 January 2006 and identifies the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patron.
The parish was created in the mid-2000s, when the new residential districts of western Cheonan were expanding rapidly and parish territories in the Ssangyong and Buldang areas were being subdivided. Today it is an independent parish of the Cheonan Western District, enabling local Catholics to live their liturgical and sacramental life within their own neighborhood and forming part of the broader story of Catholic expansion in western Cheonan.
History & origins
Cheonan Ssangyong 2-dong Parish was established as a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon on 10 January 2006. This was a period of rapid apartment development and population growth in the Ssangyong and Buldang areas of western Cheonan, when existing parish territories were being divided into smaller pastoral communities.
A twentieth-anniversary history of Cheonan Buldang-dong Parish explains that, after Buldang-dong was separated in 2005, another parish was created in the Ssangyong area in early 2006, and that parish naming in the area was adjusted over time. Since the Catholic Church Directory in Korea records 10 January 2006 as the establishment date of the present Cheonan Ssangyong 2-dong Parish, that date is the safest verified starting point for the history of the current community.
Because the details of early naming can be confusing across sources, this account does not state them more precisely than the evidence allows. What is clear is that the successive separations of parishes in the Ssangyong-Buldang area in 2005-2006 reflected the Diocese of Daejeon's effort to create pastoral communities on a neighborhood scale in response to large-scale residential development.
