About this place
Cheonan Sinbu-dong Parish is a parish of the Cheonan Eastern District in the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving Catholics in Sinbu-dong and neighboring areas through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its foundation on 5 October 1977 and identifies the Body and Blood of Christ as its patronal title.
The community did not begin under the name Sinbu-dong. It originated as Seonghwang-dong Parish, separated from Oryong-dong Parish as the urban area of Cheonan expanded. In 2005, the parish moved its church to Sinbu-dong and adopted its present name. Sinbu-dong Parish therefore links the older lineage of central Cheonan parishes with the present Sinbu-dong area and remains an important local community for liturgical and pastoral life in the Cheonan Eastern District.
History & origins
In the 1970s, the expansion of Cheonan's urban area and the growth of the Catholic population made it increasingly difficult for Oryong-dong Parish alone to serve the wider city. In 1977, Seonghwang-dong Parish was therefore separated from Oryong-dong, and the Catholic Church Directory in Korea records 5 October 1977 as the foundation date of what is now Sinbu-dong Parish.
The community that began in Seonghwang-dong grew for many years as a parish of eastern central Cheonan. As the city's structure and residential patterns changed, the church moved to Sinbu-dong in 2005 and the parish name was changed accordingly. This was a relocation of the pastoral center while maintaining the continuity of the same parish community.
In 2017, the parish marked its 40th anniversary with events that included an exhibition of historical photographs and materials. This official diocesan record confirms that the community founded in Seonghwang-dong in 1977 continued the same parish history after relocating to Sinbu-dong.
