About this place
Cheonan Sinbang-dong Parish belongs to the Cheonan Western District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon and serves Catholics in Sinbang-dong and neighboring areas through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment on 2 February 1998 and identifies the Sacred Heart of Jesus as its patron.
The parish began by separation from Bongmyeong-dong Parish and passed through a temporary gathering place and a prefabricated church before securing its present church. It therefore also represents the process by which new parishes were formed in response to population growth in western Cheonan and gradually developed independent liturgical spaces. Today it is an established parish of the Cheonan Western District supporting local Catholics in liturgy, the sacraments, education, and parish organizations.
History & origins
As the number of Catholics in western Cheonan increased, the Diocese of Daejeon decided to separate a new community from Bongmyeong-dong Parish. Sinbang-dong Parish was established on 2 February 1998 and initially used the basement of Bongmyeong-dong Church as a temporary gathering place. On 9 April of the same year, the community moved to a prefabricated church completed in Ssangyong-dong and began to develop an independent pastoral base.
For a period, the name of the parish did not coincide with the physical location of its church. Because another parish already existed in Ssangyong-dong, the new community retained the name Sinbang-dong. Religious sisters began serving in the parish in 2004, and as the community grew, plans were made for a more permanent church.
Construction of the new church began in March 2006 and was completed in 2011. A dedication Mass presided over by the diocesan bishop was celebrated on 14 January. This sequence shows how the Sinbang-dong community developed from temporary facilities into an established parish and expanded its pastoral infrastructure in step with the continuing growth of western Cheonan.
