Cheonan Seongjeong-dong Parish is a parish of the Cheonan Western District in the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving Catholics in the Seongjeong-dong area through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and parish community life. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its foundation on 10 August 1993 and identifies St. Paul Chong Ha-sang as its patron.
The parish became an independent pastoral community during the growth of northwestern Cheonan and later became the mother parish from which Dujeong-dong Parish was separated, showing its role in the expansion of Catholic pastoral structures in the area. Today it continues as a parish of the Cheonan Western District, supporting liturgy and sacramental life together with formation, small communities, and parish organizations.
History & origins
Cheonan Seongjeong-dong Parish was established as a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon on 10 August 1993. Dedicated under the patronage of St. Paul Chong Ha-sang, the community took shape at a time when the urban growth of northwestern Cheonan created the need for a distinct local parish.
As the parish grew, a new community was later separated from it. In December 2002, the Diocese of Daejeon decided to establish a parish in the Dujeong-dong area, and on 14 January 2003 Dujeong-dong Parish began with 733 Catholics transferred from Seongjeong-dong. This separation shows that Seongjeong-dong played the role of a mother parish in the expansion of Catholic communities in northwestern Cheonan.
The reliable sources currently available clearly establish the foundation date and the relationship with Dujeong-dong, but do not provide enough detail about an early temporary church or the construction of the present building. Accordingly, this history is limited to the verified sequence of parish establishment and subsequent separation.
