About this place

Cheonan Oryong-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Cheonan Eastern District in the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving the Catholic community in the eastern part of central Cheonan. The parish's own materials and the official Catholic directory identify St. Thérèse of Lisieux as its patron saint. The Sisters of the Korean Martyrs also share in the parish apostolate, and Bokja Kindergarten is listed as an institution associated with the parish, showing a community in which liturgy, faith formation, and care for the next generation are linked.

Mass and the sacraments, personal and communal prayer, and catechetical formation all take place within a pastoral setting shared with a religious community and an educational institution. For visitors, Oryong-dong can therefore be understood not simply as a worship building but as the center of a living community in which different generations learn and practice the Catholic faith.

History & origins

The history of Oryong-dong Parish begins in 1921, when the Catholic community in Cheonan was established as a mission station dependent on Gupo-dong Parish in Anseong. It was not yet an independent parish, but it served as a local center where Catholics in Cheonan could receive pastoral care and continue their sacramental and communal life. This small community became the starting point for the later development of parish life in Cheonan.

On May 19, 1939, the Cheonan mission station was raised to the status of Cheonan Parish, and Father Snel became its first pastor. With this change, an independent parish structure took root in Cheonan. As the city expanded and the Catholic community grew, several later local communities would eventually develop from this parish.

On November 24, 1957, the parish moved to its present site in Oryong-dong and completed the construction of its church. The relocation marked a new stage in the settlement of the community and established the physical base that continues today. In 1977 the parish changed its name to Oryong-dong Catholic Church, adopting the local name by which it is now distinguished within a city that had already begun to contain several parishes.
