About this place
Cheonan Cheongdang-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Cheonan Eastern District in the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving Catholics in the living area centered on Cheongdang-dong and Cheongsu-dong. The official Catholic directory lists the Holy Family as its patron. Located within a residential area, the parish supports ordinary Catholic life in southeastern Cheonan by giving local believers a nearby place for Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
Its dedication to the Holy Family fits the character of a local parish in which families and different generations gather together. The church is a center for liturgy, prayer, faith formation, and fellowship in the Cheongdang-dong area, and for visitors it presents the life of a relatively young parish community rooted in a newer residential district.
History & origins
Cheonan Cheongdang-dong Parish was created by the Diocese of Daejeon on January 15, 2014. It was separated from Cheonan Oryong-dong Parish and incorporated into the Cheonan Eastern District. The diocesan announcement defined its territory as parts of Cheongsu-dong, Guseong-dong, and Cheongdang-dong, and reported that the new parish community consisted of 212 households and 562 Catholics as of November 2013.
After its establishment, the community began parish life in a commercial-space church in the Beopjo Plaza building in Cheongdang-dong. As a larger space became necessary for the growing community, the parish prepared to move, and in July 2015 it relocated to another site in Cheongdang-dong. On July 19, about three hundred parishioners gathered there for the first Mass in the relocated church.
A 2015 diocesan community report mistakenly states that the parish had been established in 2015, but both the Diocese of Daejeon's original 2014 establishment notice and the official Catholic directory give January 15, 2014, as the establishment date. The most consistent chronology is therefore: parish establishment in 2014, a period in a temporary commercial-space church, and relocation with the first Mass at the new worship site in 2015.
