About this place
Cheonan Buldang-dong Parish is a parish of the Cheonan Western District in the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving Catholics in the Buldang-dong area through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its foundation on 25 January 2005 and identifies the Holy Family as its patron.
The parish was established by separation from an existing parish amid the development and population growth of western Cheonan, and it later became the mother parish of Buldang 2-dong. Its history is therefore closely connected with the expansion of the Catholic community in the city's newer residential districts. Today the church is an independent pastoral center within the Cheonan Western District and a visible expression of a parish community formed in a relatively new urban environment.
History & origins
Cheonan Buldang-dong Parish was established as a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon on 25 January 2005. A parish history volume records that preparations had begun in late 2004 around the Buldang sector of the then Ssangyong 2-dong Parish. After a temporary church was rented and Mass began to be celebrated there, the new parish was formally launched with an initial community of 96 households and 286 Catholics.
Soon after its foundation, the community undertook the construction of a new church. Building work began in 2006, and the new church was consecrated in 2007, giving the parish a stable base for liturgy and pastoral life beyond the temporary facilities. As development continued in Buldang-dong, the Catholic community also grew.
In January 2017, Buldang 2-dong Parish was separated in turn from Buldang-dong Parish. Thus a parish that had itself begun through separation became a mother parish for a new community. The history of Buldang-dong illustrates the progressive subdivision of parish structures that accompanied the rapid growth of the new residential districts of western Cheonan.
