About this place
Cheonan Bongmyeong-dong Parish is a parish of the Cheonan Western District in the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, serving Catholics around Bongmyeong-dong through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life. In 2015, the Diocese of Daejeon reported the parish's 30th anniversary, confirming that the community has continued as a local parish in western Cheonan since 1985.
Bongmyeong-dong Parish grew after separating from Oryong-dong, one of the historic mother parishes of Cheonan, and later gave rise in turn to Sinbang-dong Parish. It therefore occupies an important place in the progressive subdivision of parish territories that accompanied the expansion of the city. Today it continues to serve as a local parish where Catholics of the Cheonan Western District can share liturgy and community life close to home.
History & origins
As the Catholic community of Cheonan grew, a number of parishes were successively separated from Oryong-dong Parish. Bongmyeong-dong Parish was established within this process in 1985. The Digital Encyclopedia of Cheonan records in its history of Oryong-dong that Bongmyeong-dong was one of the parishes separated from it in that year.
As population continued to increase in western Cheonan, Bongmyeong-dong itself later gave rise to another parish. On 2 February 1998, Sinbang-dong Parish was established by separation from Bongmyeong-dong; its new community initially used the basement of Bongmyeong-dong Church as a temporary gathering place before moving to its own site. This shows that Bongmyeong-dong served as an intermediate mother parish in the westward expansion of Catholic pastoral structures in Cheonan.
In 2015, the Diocese of Daejeon reported a retreat marking the 30th anniversary of Bongmyeong-dong Parish. As an official diocesan commemoration of three decades since the 1985 foundation, it confirms the parish's history as a local community that developed and in turn generated new parishes as the city of Cheonan changed.
